MY FIRST BABY
Developmental milestones in the first week of life.
Most parents think that their delightful newborn baby won't be able to do much other than sleep, eat and cry. But baby's developmental achievements in their first week of life will astound most people.
Of course it will take some time before your baby learns to crawl, walk and talk but even at this age, you can usually expect her to:
Smile at you spontaneously which can occur within the first few days of her life. This is generally a reflex smile and is different to a social smile that occurs as a reaction to you singing or talking to baby. Social smiles usually come a little later, at around two months.
You will also notice that she has equal movement of her arms and legs while amusing herself on the floor or in her crib. Should you notice that she can move one arm or leg further that the other it could be a sign of injury or weakness and you should take her to your Paediatrician.
You will also notice that she may lift her head slightly when she is on her tummy. However newborn babies have poor head control and need their head supported at all times.
She will be able to focus briefly on objects that held about 12 to 15 inches from her face. Additionally, she will also see high contrast, simple patterns. Over the next few months her vision will improve dramatically.
There are numerous factors that can influence your experience with baby in the first few days. At the top of the list is whether you had a full-term baby without any medical problems. Additionally, whether you had a vaginal delivery or c-section. If your baby was born premature or with medical problems, she may have to go straight to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit instead of rooming with you.
Furthermore, your experiences with your new baby will be influenced by whether or not this is your first baby. If it's your first baby, every little thing from her first cries to her first diaper change can be new, surprising, exciting, and sometimes bewildering.
