Get Your Best Summer Body Without Hitting the Gym!

Summer is here, and it is time to bring out those dresses, miniskirts and shorts. After a whole season of drinking hot chocolate and eating warm bread rolls, we understand if you might not feel like your best self in your summer clothes. Also, given the peppy weather, it is a great time to get engaged in some fun activities and shed the extra calories. We understand if you might be able to afford a gym membership or might not find time to hit up your local health club. There are so may other ways you can get fit and have fun while you are doing it! At the end of the day, fitness is more than just about some ideal weight and figure as propagated by mass media. Fitness is about feeling happy and active; and being your best self. This list will give you an idea to achieve exactly that: a state of physical and mental well-being in some easy steps.

  1. Hydration: With the temperatures soaring and humidity constantly rising, it is absolutely important for you to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water every day. Water maintains the proper functioning of all your organs and aids digestion, thus maintaining your overall fitness level. Without proper hydration, you will feel sluggish, your skin will start looking dull and you might even run the risk of dehydration. If you can not drink that much water, try infusing it with lemons and cucumber for some added flavours and nutritious fun.
  2. Little droplets make an ocean: It is the small efforts you make every day that count. If you walk home from work instead of taking a cab, you will end up burning a few calories as well as saving a few extra bucks. If that is not feasible for you, run errands on foot. Do not drive to local stores and take the staircase instead of the elevator wherever you can and see the difference.
  3. Pay attention to diet: This is probably the most cliché advice ever but hear us out. It works. You do not need to put yourself on some extreme diet to see changes. Cut back on salty and sugary foods. Include more protein and vegetables in your diet and start the morning with fresh fruits. Drink green tea instead of dairy-based beverages. These little changes will go a long way in improving your fitness and making your skin glow.
  4. Watch your lifestyle: This one is tried and tested and comes with the trainer’s stamp of approval. No matter how religiously you go for your morning diet or you stick to your diet, if you can not manage stress and get a solid 8 hours of sleep, you will not see changes. Our body does all the real “betterment” processes while we are sleeping, hence sound sleep is non-negotiable.
  5. Wear your confidence: At the end of the day, if you are feeling positive and confident in your summer clothes, it does not matter whether you have the so-called ideal body. Your confidence and happiness will radiate and that is the most important part of how you appear to the world. So, keep making efforts towards a healthier lifestyle, not just for the weighing scale and the measuring tape but for your own happiness.

These were some of the easiest things you could do in order to become a fitter version of yourself this summer. We hope you follow these and have fun while doing it!

It Is Your Turn to Be Super Mommy and Super Employee!

Being a mother and having a full-time job can turn out to be challenging, for sure. Very often women tend to feel intimidated, lost and confused about how to balance both roles. But the fact is, it is highly possible to excel in your workplace while having a successful family life. The key is to focus on a plan, get organized, and find the right balance between profession and parenthood. With a little bit of smart planning and self-confidence, you can totally strike this balance and we are here to tell you how:

  1. Be in the moment: It is totally normal for new mothers to feel guilty about not being at home with their child. However, if this guilt eats into your focus at workplace, it will affect your performance and the cycle of guilt will continue. Hence, we suggest being entirely present where you are. If guilt strikes in the workplace, consciously drive it out by reminding yourself that this job will help you secure your child’s future and get her many opportunities.
  2. Invest in proper childcare: Another tangible way you could ensure that you are less worried about your child while at work, is to find out the best quality care for her while you are away. Make no compromises as far as hiring the best nanny or getting the best creche is concerned. Good childcare is an investment: not just in her development but also in your mental well-being and professional growth. We recommend hiring nannies with a history of long-term commitments to families, because there is a greater chance they will adjust well with your child.
  3. Planning is the key: You can plan your entire day and prepare everything you need in the morning the night before to avoid the early morning rush and chaos. If you have school-going kids, on weeknights it is a good idea to pack their lunches, lay out their clothes and your own; and decide what to make for breakfast. You can also do some prior meal prep if needed, to save time in the morning. If there are any changes in the family schedule, discuss it the night before.
  4. Family calendar: This is a great idea to keep your tasks organised as per your priorities, as well as involve your kids in the decision-making process of the family. We recommend sitting down with your kids at least every fortnight or a week to plan ahead and put it on calendar. You can hang it up in the hall or kitchen, for everyone to see. Involving your kids has multiple benefits- you get to spend some time with them, you get some clarity on what the week looks like, they learn decision making and prioritising and they also take small steps into being more responsible.
  5. Keep the conversation going: Just like you should be involved with your family in the planning and prioritising process, you should also communicate clearly with your superior and HR, regarding any constraints you might have. It will help them tailor your workload accordingly and manage expectations that they have from you. While seeking maternity leave, it is absolutely imperative that you are clear about how much leave you will get and how long will you be paid for.

If you channelize your thought process and functioning in an efficient manner, it will be that much easier for you to not just function but also excel both in office and at home. We hope this article helped you do so in an easy manner. All you need to do is to be calm and communicate clearly, and nothing can stop you from being the super woman you are meant to be!

Burn Off the Stubborn Fat with These 5 Foods

Tired of trying to lose that last bit of belly fat? Are you diligently sticking to your no-junk resolution and working out frequently but still can’t seem to lose that little fat? Worry not, girl. We have got you covered. Below is a list of commonly available foods that work miracles on your metabolism, and efficiently reduce those pesky little bulges. Add these few to your diet and watch them work the magic!

1. Fish: Some of us love eating fish while some of us absolutely hate it. Whichever side you are on, salmon, herring, sardines, mackerel and other oily fish are great for burning fat, so you might consider adding them to your diet. These fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to reduce inflammation and decrease heart disease risk. An added benefit: fish are great for your skin. So, add some fish to your daily diet for that fabulous figure and glowing skin!

2. Coffee: One of the most popular beverages worldwide and a staple in almost every kitchen, the humble coffee is a great fat burner. Caffeine increases metabolic rate by an impressive 3–13% and is also shown to improve energy for workouts. These factors combined go a long way in burning stubborn fat. However, stick to a range of 100–400 mg per day to avoid insomnia and jitteriness.

3. Green Tea: This beverage is slowly catching up with coffee in terms of popularity. Loaded with antioxidants, they are great for your overall health as well as energy levels. Green tea is very effective in maintaining your gut health, which goes a long way in achieving that flat tummy. Additionally, green tea is loaded with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), an antioxidant that promotes fat burning and the loss of belly fat. Some studies have also shown that people who consume green tea burn more fat while working out.

4. Coconut oil: Rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), this humble ingredient works wonders to reduce fat. A meta-analysis from 2015, which appeared in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, found that these medium-chain triglycerides could lead to weight loss. However, more studies are needed to confirm the results. Many scientists believe that medium-chain triglycerides can increase energy consumption and reduce fat stores. Coconut oil is easily absorbed by the body and acts swiftly on stubborn belly fat to show dramatic results. It created a lot of buzz on social media last year when bulletproof coffee became the latest obsession of fitness freaks. It is commonly available, affordable and harmless in limited quantities, so we recommend you give it a try.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar: This has attained cult status in recent years, thanks to the buzz on social media. People swear by drinking ACV with warm water on an empty stomach. Apart from burning fat due to the acetic acid present in it, ACV also helps your gut and overall health because it contains nutrients like pectins and small amounts of vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin, folate, potassium, calcium, iron and magnesium. Drinking ACV regularly has shown to improve energy levels, burn fat and give glowing skin. Sign us up!

This was the list of metabolism-boosting foods that we swear by. But don’t take our word for it, try out for yourself and get the body of your dreams!

Detox Your Skin for That Radiant Glow with These Easy Steps

Do you party every weekend like there is no tomorrow? Or has the holiday season caught you in really high spirits? Either way, parties do a lot more damage to our skin than we realise. Even if you diligently take off your makeup at the end of the night, the late nights, lack of hydration, eating oily and salty food and drinking can cause toxins to build up on our body which can lead to breakouts or dullness on our skin.

Even if you are not much of a party girl, the everyday commute to work or college exposes your skin to all the pollutants, which if not cleansed properly can damage your skin. Thus, no matter what your lifestyle is, it is important to detox you skin periodically to keep the pores clean, this will not only prevent breakouts but also help your products work better. To detox your skin, you don’t always need to go to the parlour for expensive clean-ups. You can follow some easy steps at home for the same:

Cleanse: This should be a part of your daily routine but be mindful of it in order to detox. Cleanse thoroughly using a cleanser meant for your skin type, twice a day every day. If you have dry skin, opt for an oil cleanser in the morning and foam cleanser at night. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, a water-based gel will be perfect for you both the times.

Steam: Steam your face or take a hot shower. This will allow the subsequent processes of scrubbing and masking to be easier. To get maximum benefits out of a steam, you can add lemon peel or neem leaves into the boiling water.

Mud mask: Mud masks are crucial for detox because they help to draw out the most impurities in the top layers of the skin. Apply a good quality mud mask every other day for the duration of your detox. Let the mask sit for as long as directed, then wipe it off with a damp washcloth followed by rinsing your face with normal water.

Hydration: While using a moisturiser for your skin type is essential for hydration and skin glow, it is also important that you hydrate yourself inside out. For a thorough detoxing, sip on plain warm water every day for 1 whole week. And if you want some extra detoxing power and a punch of fruity taste to make your water more fun, add some lemons or cucumber or berries to the water.

Watch your diet: This is the most holistic approach to detoxing. Cut out junk food and everything oily, sugary and salty from your diet for at least a few days. Start your morning with fresh fruits. Replace soda with herbal teas and fresh juices and completely quit alcohol. Have more salads and fresh greens instead of breads and pastas.

Exercise: A good workout is the best way to work up a sweat and release the toxins from your body. It will also improve your blood circulation and give you that glow.

Sleep: At the end of the day, a good 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep is essential to hit ‘reset’ for your body and allow it to restore and repair itself naturally.

These were some easy ways you can detox your skin and body after the crazy vacation or a few exhausting days at work. Go ahead and follow these tips to take care of yourself, because you deserve it!

Eat Your Way to Luscious Locks!

Has dry, frizzy and falling hair become an everyday saga for you? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Hair thinning and breakage is a problem for many. All of us crave for long, strong and silky hair but the modern-day lifestyle with all its stress and pollution, gets to us. It harms our internal health, the impact of which we mostly don’t understand immediately. However, all these internal deficiencies pile up and start surfacing on our external appearance. When an alarming number of hair strands falls out while brushing every day, it is then that we take note of what our body is trying to tell us. Many a times the solution to all our hair problems lies in eating right to enable our body to function properly. A few superfoods for your hair are given below:

Eggs: Eggs are a powerhouse of protein. The structure of our hair is essentially made up of a protein called keratin. So, it is important to eat eggs and provide the hair with its building blocks.  Additionally, eggs are rich in a B vitamin called biotin that helps hair grow. Not having enough of this vitamin can lead to hair loss. Biotin also helps strengthen brittle fingernails.

Spinach and other dark leafy greens: The reason for your hair fall may be due to deficiency of iron. Iron provides strength to hair without which it tends to become weaker and weaker. When your body is running low on iron, oxygen and nutrients are not getting transported to the hair roots and follicles adequately which can inhibit growth and make your strands weak. Naturally, when you try to brush out the weak and brittle hair break off easily and fall out. To counter this, include spinach and other dark leafy greens in your diet every day.

Oysters: These are not just exquisite to eat, but very beneficial for the volume of your hair as well. Oysters are a rich source of zinc; which cells need to help with hair growth. If you have notice that your hair is thinning drastically, include oysters and other food sources rich in zinc to help restore the volume of your tresses. Some other natural sources of zinc include beef, crab and lobster. If you do not have access to any of these foods or cannot eat any of these, look for breakfast cereals fortified with zinc or have a handful of pumpkin seeds every day.

Sweet potatoes: Is your hair feeling dry and dull off late? Maybe your body is short of vitamin A. Consider adding sweet potatoes to your daily diet. They are great to eat and also very helpful for your body. Sweet potatoes contain an antioxidant called beta carotene, which is converted by our body into vitamin A. This vitamin helps our scalp to produce sebum which keeps our hair silky, smooth and shiny.

Citrus fruits: Summer is right around the corner and having citrus fruits are a great way to beat the heat. This way, you would also be doing a favour to you skin and hair as your body requires Vitamin C for iron absorption. Vitamin C is also required for the production of collagen that make capillaries that connect to the hair shafts strong thus, ensuring regular supply of nutrients and quick hair growth. So, this summer, make yourself that daily glass of lemonade without the sugar. Add honey if you want, and your hair problems are sorted!

These were some of the easiest ways you could restore your damaged hair to its former glory. Have fun relishing these foods and very soon you will have perfect hair.

Is Beauty Sleep a Myth or a Reality?

Is sound sleep really important for your skin? If that was true, what’s the point of all those high-end products that claim to give “re-energized and rested skin” within seconds even if you have slept only two hours last night? Turns out, no product in this world can replace the benefit that a good night’s worth of sleep does to your skin. The reason being the cell regeneration that takes place while you are sleeping, is what makes all the difference to your skin. The body heals and relaxes itself overall while you slumber, and the impact of good health is bound to show on your skin. Curious as to exactly how this happens? Read on to find out more:

  1. Increased blood flow: While you sleep, the blood flow increases in the facial area. The body pumps oxygen to your face. This heals your skin from the damage caused by exposure to sun, pollution and free radicals that your skin has undergone throughout the day. This regenerates your complexion naturally, so you can wake up to a more youthful complexion. For that natural glow and flushed cheeks, now you know what to do!
  2. Stronger immune system: All the organs of the body repair themselves while you sleep. So does the skin. This is one fact most of us know but tend to overlook. Specially for people suffering from adult acne or cystic acne, it is imperative to get good sleep. There is no other way the skin is going to heal and strengthen. If you want to see the full benefits of all your home remedies and expensive acne-fighting products, focus on getting an uninterrupted 8 hours of sound sleep every night.
  3. Better hydration: All the expensive hydrating serums you may have applied, all the sheet masks that are a part of your 10-step K beauty regime, they all need you to get enough sleep to be able to work their miracle. Your skin absorbs hyaluronic acid the best when you sleep. This is also the time when your body builds collagen and elastin. These 3 compounds together keep your skin youthful, fresh and supple.
  4. Say no to panda eyes: Good sleep is the key to fresh looking under eyes. This is probably the first thing anyone looking for a cure to dark circles is told. But what exactly is the reason? We know that the skin under the eyes is a lot thinner than the rest of our face. The greyish-blue shade under our eyes is largely caused by dilated blood vessels right under the skin, that show through because it is thin. Studies show that these blood vessels dilate to allow for more oxygen to pass through, to help regenerate the body in conditions of extreme stress. So, the next time you invest in an expensive eye serum, also invest in another extra hour of sleep and a few minutes of meditation.
  5. Delayed ageing: Lack of sleep contributes to fine lines, wrinkles, puffy eyes and dull skin. The skin looks sallow and exhausted. This can make you look much older than your years, if it continues for a long period of time. As a preventive measure to delay ageing, we recommend you pay attention to eating clean, drinking enough water, working out frequently and getting good quality, sleep for 7-9 hours every day.

These were the reasons why we think getting your 8 hours of beauty sleep everyday is not overrated at all. The next time you think of stepping up your skincare game, we strongly suggest you get back to the basics. Take a warm shower, sip on some herbal tea, turn off the lights and bring out that silk pillowcase. Sleep your way to a better skin!

Spearmint Tea: Does it Really Help to Cure PCOS?

PCOS. The abbreviation that used to incite some fear that the mention of a disease normally does, has now become part of many women’s lives. Sadly, this change has happened over the past few decades because the number of women suffering from Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) has shot up dramatically. Triggered by excess androgens, this disease causes a lot of emotional pain and physical change in women, some even as young as 11-12 years old.

How can PCOS be cured?

While allopathic medicines such as metformin, oestradiol etc can artificially cause the hormones to induce periods, they come with their fair share of side effects such as weight gain, mood swings etc.

Is there any permanent cure to PCOS which has no side effects?

Enter spearmint tea. Multiple studies have proven that this herb does indeed work to reduce testosterone levels in women. There are two forms of testosterone: free testosterone and total testosterone. Free testosterone is the form that contributes to the hirsutism and hormonal acne that PCOS sufferers experience. It can also stimulate some female hormones that can become depleted due to PCOS.

Scientific research has not determined what in spearmint tea lowers testosterone levels, but its effectiveness has been demonstrated in multiple studies.

For women suffering from PCOS, their self esteem takes the biggest hit due to the unnatural weight gain, hormonal acne and excess growth of facial hair. No wonder spearmint tea is a huge hit among them as it promises to cure all these problems if consumed regularly. In fact, the number of women who have sung its praises on social media is frankly so high that you can just not ignore the phenomenon that spearmint tea has become.

Is that all spearmint tea does for me?

Surprisingly, no. Spearmint tea has many more benefits., a few of which we have listed below:

1.       Digestive health: Spearmint is commonly used to help relieve symptoms of indigestion, nausea, vomiting and gas. The compound (-)-carvone, which is naturally found in spearmint, has been shown to strongly inhibit muscle contractions in the digestive tract, which may explain how this herb helps relieve digestive upsets.

2.       Loaded with antioxidants: Spearmint contains a large number of antioxidant compounds, including rosmarinic acid, flavones and flavanones like limonene and menthol. These are found to protect against and repair damage like heart diseases, diabetes and cancer caused by free radicals, which are harmful molecules that can lead to oxidative stress.

3.       Bacterial infections: Spearmint is a commonly used flavouring agent in toothpaste, breath mints and chewing gums because it does more than just freshening your breath — it also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which may help kill the bacteria in your mouth that cause bad breath.

How do I include spearmint tea in my daily diet?

This should not be much of a problem, since this minty, sweet drink is a delight to have at any hour of the day and will leave you refreshed. However, the best way to consume it to get the most benefits is to drink it twice or thrice daily after meals. Heat the water and add a spoonful of leaves to it. Simmer on low flame for a few minutes and turn the flame off. Leave the tea to steep for a good 15-20 minutes before you drink it. Enjoy it without milk or sugar.

A word of caution here: do not drink spearmint tea in excess. It may cause problems with absorption of iron.

So now that you know all about the benefits of spearmint tea and how to drink it in the best way, have you brewed yourself a cup yet?

The Truth About Parenting Kids with Special Needs

Raising a child is not going to be a cakewalk, or so did everyone tell you. What no one told you is that if your child happens to have special needs, don’t sweat it. It can be just as fun and an enriching experience. Whether the disabilities are physical, or mental or even related to learning, the process of enabling the child to face the challenges of everyday life can seem quite taxing for the parent. These preconceived notions create a lot of mental stress for the parent. Our advice is, lose your fears, not your mind. Your child is just as capable as any other child out there. Having said that, some issues in your bundle of joy may leave him feeling a little bit out of sync with the mainstream world.

Here is a guide for you to get started on being the best parent ever for him!

Acceptance is the key:

The first thing you need to do is to accept the fact that your child has a little more nuanced needs than usual, and that there is nothing wrong with it. People have overcome many such disabilities and achieved great things in life. In a day and era where breakout music stars like Billie Eilish are speaking about Tourette’s syndrome on a platform as mainstream as Ellen, kids really do have great role models to look up to and learn that they should be proud of just who they are. All he needs is your support. So, you need to be in a calm state of mind to be able to come up with the best possible solutions for him.

Get the right help:

Merely worrying about your kid’s future will not suffice. You need to find out the best pediatrician who has enough experience dealing with such cases and get on board to drawing up a plan of action regarding your child’s treatment. Consider informing the school authorities as well. Monitor his progress and participation in school activities. You can do your share of the guiding at home, and periodically check in with the school to be on the same page as them in your child’s developmental process. You can look up some support groups online. These groups consist of parents whose children are going through the same thing. Thus, you might get some major insights, or at least have other people to share your journey with.

Positivity is essential:

The bitter truth is, at some point in life every such parent has feared the judgement of society. Sometimes even their sympathy leaves us with a crippled feeling. And we certainly would not want this feeling of helplessness to transcend to your child. It really helps if you can surround yourself and your child with supportive people, who really understand, and create a nurturing environment for him to have a fun childhood. They say you are the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with. So, you really don’t want to surround yourself and your little one with judgement, negativity and fake sympathy, do you?

Maintain your health:

Raising a child, let alone one with special needs, is quite a draining activity. Constantly having to be available for them, taking them to check-ups, school activities etc can leave parents devoid of energy to take care of themselves. This will eventually take a toll on the child as well. Hence it is of utmost importance that you focus on a healthy lifestyleEat rightget enough sleepworkout a bit regularly. And do things that make you happy. Socialise. Physical and mental well-being is an investment that you are making on yourself, and there is nothing to feel guilty about it.

Believe in yourself

Take a deep breath. Tell yourself that you have got this. No matter how many things you have done right, a few of those helpless moments are bound to strike. It is very important to keep your calm, otherwise your child may eventually start feeling guilty for putting you in a state like this. Who wants that? So, follow some positive affirmations and meditate for a little while every day and tell yourself that you will get through this just fine, and that the future holds nothing but endless joy and possibilities for your little one.

What Inclusivity Means for the Beauty Industry

It is on Instagram, it is on Facebook, there are a dozen videos on YouTube. The latest launch by your favorite cosmetic company is making waves and blowing up your social media news feed. Ladies, you know this scenario is not a one-off. This is almost every other day. The influencers raving about a product on social media creates so much frenzy in your peers, it seems every friend and colleague owns that newest foundation or concealer that comes with a promise of solving all your problems. The next thing you know, you have spent almost half of your previous month’s savings on placing an online order.

Sure, at this point I could deliver a full-fledged sermon on how social media has stoked our consumerism but let us look at the other side of the coin. What really tempts you to purchase every new foundation, concealer or nude lipstick? For a lot of us, the bigger reason than mere temptation is that we can never seem to find that perfect shade of base that makes us feel really good about ourselves. The cosmetic industry has had a long history of portraying Eurocentric features as the “ideal” standard of beauty. Naturally, it became difficult for women of color to find perfect products to complement their skin tone.

While the buzzword of the beauty industry seems to be inclusivity, what is it actually about? Sure, it starts with a lot of foundation shades covering the whole spectrum of skin colors and undertones, but inclusivity is so much more than that. To be truly inclusive, cosmetic companies should aim to create a range of products to suit women from different ethnicity, skin and hair types and lifestyles, in a budget that they can afford. All this combined will truly make every woman feel special, empowered, and confident in her own skin. They need to understand that the goal is to make every woman out there feel beautiful, not end up giving her a complex because she does not fit into a particular category of skin colour or hair type or body image that has long been considered the norm of beauty.

In countries like the US and India, where the population is largely diverse, many women have struggled with this problem for decades. Sure, a few high-end brands like MacEstee Lauder and Bobbi Brown had a wider shade range, but the price range of these brands were again, not inclusive enough for all budgets.  It was not until Rihanna launched her juggernaut of a line, Fenty, that the beauty industry realized how much of the market was left unexplored. Fenty’s Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation was launched in a record 40 shades across all undertones, and the darker shades sold out at the very beginning. Coupled with great quality and Rihanna’s star power, Fenty was unstoppable. It is probably then when other brands understood that inclusivity is not merely a trend, but a necessity to stay in the game. And I am talking pure money here.

Some brands did latch on at the right time. Estee Lauder expanded the shade range of DoubleWear foundation to 50 shades and even appointed African-American Anouk Yai as the brand ambassador.

The fashion industry took major strides in body shape inclusivity when Ashley Grahame, a plus sized model, was asked to do a cover shoot for Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, traditionally touted as a petite woman’s domain.

India, easily one of the most diverse countries in the world, terribly lags on this front. Lakme, the country’s homegrown bestseller, has a shade range only geared towards fairer women. Entire product ranges are titled “Absolute White”. And it is for a fact that most of the high-end brands remain out of budget. Even drugstore foreign brands like CoverGirl, who seem to be doing diversity right, are inaccessible to Indian woman.

It is high time that more cosmetic brands sat up and took note, if nothing else, that there is a lot of money to be made out there with products intended for women of all skin colours. Probably then, would your savings not take a hit every month.
